Hello, world Name: Matthew Lawrence McGann Occupation: Admissions Officer Employer: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology As a consequence of my job, I am frequently asked to tell various chapters of my life story. Heres an abridged version of the whole thing. I grew up in Hampton Bays, Long Island, New York, a small town with a tourism and maritime economy. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, I attended a small Catholic school, Our Lady of the Hamptons. I then made the big leap to the public high school (my graduating class: 65 students!), and managed to take all three of the AP classes the school offered by my junior year. With few options remaining, I cluelessly applied to colleges. Being the first in my family to go to college, and being from a town that sent few of its graduates on to highly selective schools, I wasnt really sure of what I was doing. Largely, I applied to the top schools on the east coast that did not require the SAT II Writing exam (a test that i dont like much; perhaps thats a later blog entry). After receiving admission letters, I figured Id choose one of the Ivy League schools. It seemed only natural, given my wide array of interests: math, politics, architecture, film, literature I visited the Ivy schools, and was surprised to find that while the schools clearly were excellent institutions, I didnt really feel the click with any of them. As the May 1 deadline was quickly approaching, I decided Id check out one of the other schools I had been admitted to, MIT. I had briefly visited MIT during a previous trip to another school in Cambridge, spending very little time at this school which I had already made up my mind was too nerdy, too narrow, and too, well, male to be the college of my choosing. On this second and more thorough trip to MIT, all of the stereotypes began to break down. Rather than being no fun, I discovered hundreds of student groups, and Boston a quick swim across the river (or, I suppose, walk across the bridge). The curriculum turned out to have everything I was looking for: in addition to the awesome math department, which I had taken as a given, I surprisingly discovered really terrific departments in all of my other interests. Finally, I was pleased to discover the diversity of the student body on many different levels. Coming from a conservative, 90+% white town where diversity meant Are you Catholic or are you Methodist?, a school with no majority race (plurality: white folks, ~35%) and many different viewpoints and interests was very appealing. And, yes, 42% of the population at MIT, as it turned out, was female. In addition to discovering my stereotypes to be false, I also felt that click with MIT. You really get the sense that something is happening at MIT, that 24-7-365 people were pursuing their passions. MIT pulses with this energy that Ive never felt anywhere else. People are excited about everything that they do, and the enthusiasm is infectious. It really is the coolest place on earth (proof in a future blog). I choose MIT and never looked back. My student experience culminated with my serving a year as President of the Undergraduate Association, MITs undergraduate student government. After graduating, I worked briefly in e-commerce (it was the thing to do back in those days), then came thisclose to taking a job trading securities on Wall Street. But ultimately, my family and schooling had instilled too much of a spirit of service into me, so I turned down the potentially-very-lucrative finance job and instead applied for work in the field of education. En apenas unos segundos se obtiene la respuesta confirmando que el potencial trabajador està ¡ autorizado o, por el contrario, que no lo està ¡. La respuesta negativa se seà ±ala con una nota conocida como no confirmacià ³n tentativa (TNC, por sus siglas en inglà ©s) y que equivale a una no autorizacià ³n. En este artà ­culo se informa sobre el funcionamiento de este programa, quà © empresas està ¡n obligadas a utilizarlo, quà © hacer cuando e-verify no confirma que una persona està ¡ autorizada para trabajar y, finalmente, cà ³mo cualquier persona puede comprobar quà © informacià ³n tiene  este programa sobre ella. Por à ºltimo, cabe destacar que e-verify solamente se puede utilizar para verificar informacià ³n sobre nuevos empleados,  nunca sobre personas que ya està ¡n trabajando para una empresa. Quà © empresas està ¡n obligadas a utilizar e-verify En este punto la respuesta no es fà ¡cil ni à ºnica, ya que la obligatoriedad o no de e-verify està ¡ regulada por leyes federales y estatales, lo cual tiene como una de sus consecuencias que se producen enormes diferencias entre estados. En todo caso, en la actualidad mà ¡s de un millà ³n de empresas utilizan este programa. En primer lugar,  todas las empresas pueden libre y gratuitamente utilizar el servicio de e-verify, si asà ­ lo desean, para asegurarse de que todos los empleados que contratan tienen papeles para trabajar legalmente en Estados Unidos. Esto aplica a los 50 estados de la Unià ³n y tambià ©n a sus territorios, como por ejemplo Puerto Rico, aunque en este punto hay excepciones, como el caso de la Samoa americana. En cuanto a la obligacià ³n de registrarse y utilizar e-verify de acuerdo a las leyes federales, aplican varios supuestos, siendo el mà ¡s comà ºn  el que afecta a las empresas que contratan con el gobierno federal o alguna de sus agencias. En este caso, la regla general es que todas las empresas està ¡n obligadas, a menos que aplique algunas de las excepciones, como es el caso de que el contrato entre el gobierno y la compaà ±Ãƒ ­a se extienda por menos de 120 dà ­as, o el monto de la obra o servicio sea inferior a $150.000 o que el trabajo se desarrolle en su totalidad fuera de los Estados Unidos. Asimismo, esa regla aplica en los casos de subcontrataciones y empresas afiliadas, si bien la ley permite excepciones. Pero ademà ¡s existen otras reglas federales menos conocidas que  tambià ©n imponen el obligado cumplimiento de este programa. Por ejemplo, es imperativo registrase y utilizar e-verify cuando se contrata a estudiantes internacionales con visa F-1 para el programa OPT en su modalidad de extensià ³n para carreras STEM (Ciencias, Tecnologà ­a, Ingenierà ­a y Matemà ¡ticas, por sus siglas en inglà ©s). En cuanto a los estados, se producen situaciones extremadamente diversas que van desde la prohibicià ³n de utilizar e-verify a nivel estatal a la obligatoriedad de utilizarlo para agencias y contratistas de los gobiernos estatales y locales, y tambià ©n para la mayorà ­a de empresas privadas, incluso en el caso de que carezcan de  relacià ³n de negocios con las administraciones pà ºblicas. Debido a la gran variedad legislativa se recomienda verificar la ley que aplica en cada estado. Este artà ­culo se limita a mencionar la situacià ³n en los siete  estados con mà ¡s poblacià ³n inmigrante y en cuyos territorios residen el 70 por ciento de los migrantes presentes en la actualidad en Estados Unidos.   Asà ­, en aplicacià ³n de la Ley de Aceleracià ³n del Empleo de 2011, en California està ¡ prohibido que las agencias estatales, las ciudades o los condados exijan a las empresas privadas el uso de e-verify. Ademà ¡s, desde 2016 las empresas que utilicen e-verify pueden ser multadas con un mà ¡ximo de $10.000 si utilizan la informacià ³n obtenida a travà ©s de ese sistema para una finalidad distinta a la de verificar autorizacià ³n para trabajar de una persona. En Florida, en aplicacià ³n de la Orden Ejecutiva 11-02, està ¡n obligados a utilizar e-verify todas las empresas que presten servicios o vendan productos a agencias estatales. En Illinois la ley HB1743 permite el uso de e-verify por parte de empresas privadas pero penaliza el mal uso de la informacià ³n obtenida. Ademà ¡s, la ley SB11 prohibe a agencias estatales o locales exigir el empleo de e-verify. En Nueva Jersey y en Nueva York no existen leyes ni à ³rdenes ejecutivas regulando el empleo de e-verify, por lo tanto su aplicacià ³n a nivel estatal es voluntario. En Pennsylvania, la ley SB625 requiere el uso de e-verify para todos los contratistas y subcontratistas de obras pà ºblicas por un importe superior a $25.000. En Texas, por orden ejecutiva RP-80, està ¡n obligados a utilizar e-verify las agencias estatales y los contratistas con el estado. Ademà ¡s, en aplicacià ³n de la ley SB374 las instituciones de educacià ³n superior, como por ejemplo universidades, està ¡n obligadas a usar este sistema. Es por ello que, ante  esa situacià ³n, el empleado tiene dos opciones. En primer lugar, aceptar la negativa, en cuyo caso el empleador darà ¡ por terminada la relacià ³n entre ambas partes. Pero, en segundo lugar, puede apelar esa decisià ³n del sistema e-verify. En este caso el empleador no puede posponer el inicio del trabajo o del entrenamiento, ni tampoco puede suspenderlo o aplazarlo si ya ha comenzado. Ademà ¡s, el empleado debe contactar o bien con  el DHS o bien con la Administracià ³n de la Seguridad Social. La opcià ³n depende de lo que diga el sistema de e-verify cuando notifica la negativa. Si se debe contactar con el DHS,  el telà ©fono para marcar es el  888-897-7781  y debe hacerse dentro de los ocho dà ­as laborales siguientes a la decisià ³n de no confirmacià ³n tentativa. Deben tenerse a mano todos los datos generados por la TNC, como por ejemplo el nà ºmero de caso. Ademà ¡s, debe esperarse preguntas relacionadas con cambios de estatus migratorios y las fechas en los que tuvieron lugar. Corporate Social Reponsibility of the Tobacco Industry free essay sample

According to Harvard University, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business strategy that encompasses the ways in which an organisation manages its economic, social and environmental impact. As such, the methods of managing an organisation’s impact can decide whether the organisation is ethical or unethical. There are eight principles stated in the Global Business Standards Codex (GBSC) which assist in the assessment of ethics of an organisation or industry (Paine et al. 2005). These principles of the GBSC set the standard in an economic, social and environmental sense which all organisations in the global economy should adhere to. Therefore, the tobacco industry’s (TI) use of CSR strategy is unethical. This is because the TI’s use of CSR fails to adhere by the transparency, dignity and citizenship principles of the GBSC. Nevertheless, there are advantages and disadvantages of the TI using CSR strategies which benefit the stakeholders. Hence the CSR strategy used by the TI is nevertheless a valid strategy in the sense that this strategy improves the TI’s unethical public image. The TI is breaching the transparency principle by using CSR strategies to create a facade so that it can be perceived by the general public as an ethical industry. This is in violation of the transparency principle as the TI is not conducting business in an open and truthful manner. However it can be argued that the TI isn’t required to enclose all information and that adhering to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) index is legally enough (Global Reporting Initiative 2012). By meeting the minimum requirements of the GRI index, major tobacco companies can maintain their competitive advantage by not revealing their marketing strategies which the transparency principle would require. Nevertheless, the TI has been professed as an industry which solely focuses its resources on maximising profit which disregards the health of its users let it be first hand or second hand (World Health Organisation 2004). Epidemiology research by English Spencer (2007) has shown that using the TI’s products if used as directed results in cardiovascular, respiratory, malignancy, reproductive and visual diseases which may lead to death. Hence these courses of events which include published epidemiology research which state that using TI’s product increases the chances of cancer ave generated the ethical issue of TI misusing the CSR strategy. Hence, due to increased awareness by the general public on dangers of smoking (Office on Smoking and Health 2001) and a rise in tobacco related deaths, (Proctor et al. 2011), the TI has pursued the CSR strategy to improve its public image. The TI is using CSR strategy because it has created a bad reputation due to its products being deemed as unsafe by major research organisations (World Health Organisation 2004). Therefore, the TI needs to change its public image from unethical to ethical to sustain profits and stay a profitable industry. The ethical issue present is that the TI is misusing the CSR initiative (Friedman 2009). To warrant that this unethical behaviour won’t happen in the future, the TI, which includes its managers and employees, must inform the public of their genuine intentions. This would make the TI transparent hence its CSR strategy would adhere by the transparency principle thus making it ethical. The TI’s CSR is a strategy which it is using to increase profitability and not contribute to the human development and wellbeing. This information is unknown to the general public. Therefore it can be concluded that the TI is engaging in unethical activities while misleading public to perceive otherwise. This leads to the conclusion that even though this CSR strategy has resulted in increased profits in the long term (Hirschhorn 2004), the TI’s use of the CSR strategy is ultimately a breach of the transparency principle regardless of it improving TI’s public image and thus makes the TI an unethical industry. The TI isn’t considered unethical for only breaching the transparency principle as it also fails to comply with the Dignity principle. This is because its CSR strategy promotes the use of its products which is detrimental to human health. Firstly, the TI has introduced a packet of cigarettes which is half the size and price of the regular packet (Barraclough Morrow). Secondly, the TI is purposely portraying smoking as an adult activity by promoting smoking in youth-oriented movies (Palazzo Richter 2005). Finally, restrictions such as age (Baker, Brandon Chassin 2004) have been placed on ways to acquire cigarettes which make it harder for youth smokers to use TI’s products (World Health Organisation 2004). All these activities have the compounding effect of portraying the use TI’s products as desirable in the youth community. The TI has introduced the smaller packets of cigarettes which are cheaper. This course of action will have a negative ethical impact on society because the cheaper packet of cigarettes allows easier access to youth-smokers which would then increase sales of TI and thus fulfil their goal of maximising profit. Also, by portraying smoking as an adult activity, the TI is creating incentives for under-aged smokers to purchase TI’s products and thus having an unethical impact on society. Under-age smoking has the effect of preventing brain growth and increases the chances of lung cancer and cardiovascular disease in youths (Li, X, Zaiane, O Li ZH eds 2006) thus not complying by the Dignity Principle. A prescribed course of action that’ll ensure that the unethical activities stated above won’t occur in the future is that the smaller packets should be prohibited from sale thus increasing the difficulty for youth to purchase cigarettes. Another viable option is to increase price or taxation of TI’s products and to stop smoking on youth-oriented films. But currently none of these actions have been put forward. The Dignity Principle encompasses issues on human rights and safety (Stanwick Stanwick as cited in ed. Campbell 2011). Hence, through promoting smoking in youths, the TI is violating the dignity principle and thus it can be concluded that the TI is unethical in misusing the CSR strategy to achieve its business goals. The TI is failing to act in accordance to the Citizenship principle by not preserving the environment even when using CSR strategies to attempt to make TI’s operations environmentally sustainable. This is shown through the TI’s growing of tobacco in developing countries has led to extensive land clearance and deforestation (Tobacco in Australia 2008). Other environmentally detrimental activities the TI is inappropriately using include the use of agrichemicals to promote growth of TI’s crops and unrecyclable packaging used which is contributing to landfill. The TI’s CSR strategy promotes sustainable harvest of crops. However, the phases of production used in manufacturing TI’s products use carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas that causes global warming (Otanez Glantz 2011). The TI has been allowed to clear land which has led to deforestation in developing countries. This is mainly because of the lenient environmental laws in these countries which the TI is targeting. The agrichemicals have been used to promote faster growth of tobacco, which was done to increase production rates and thus profit of the TI (Tobacco in Australia 2008). Most packaging of TI’s products is encompassed in plastic which uses the unrecyclable chemical polyethylene. This has led to increased landfill globally. The TI must make a genuine attempt to have sustainable environmental practices by promoting plantation of trees and sustainable harvest of crops which won’t have an overall detrimental impact on the environment. The TI should also use sustainable energy sources such as solar energy or wind energy to promote sustainable energy sources. The TI has exploited the CSR strategy to increase its profits and stay competitive in the global economy. Therefore the TI’s use of the CSR strategy doesn’t adhere to the Citizenship Principle as the TI is engaging in unsustainable environmental practices thus failing to preserve public goods such as the environment and atmosphere. Therefore the TI’s use of CSR is unethical. Although the TI has been unethical by failing to adhere by the Transparency, Dignity and Citizenship Principles of the GBSC, it can be argued that the TI was fulfilling the goals of some groups of its stakeholders, that is, its stockholders and employees. This means that the CSR is a valid strategy that has improved the TI’s public image as an increase in TI’s profits indicates the success of the CSR initiative. Therefore it can be deducted that the TI is a multifaceted industry in the sense that it can be perceived as being ethical by pursuing business goals to fulfil its corporate promises to its owners, employees and the government. As such, it can be said that the TI’s use of the CSR strategy is advantageous for some stakeholders and disadvantageous for other stakeholders. In conclusion, the TI has used the CSR strategy effectively to successfully improve its unethical public image. However, this success has been achieved by unethical means as TI’s CSR strategy utilizes misleading marketing tactics, violates human rights through promoting unsafe practices such as under-age smoking and the strategy also fails to preserve the environment which is public property. Hence, the TI has failed to adhere by the Transparency, Dignity and Citizenship principle of the GBSC respectively.

History of Belgium Like many of the worlds countries, Belgium has a long history. Its name is derived from the Belgae, a Celtic tribe that lived in the area in the first century B.C.E. Also, during the first century, the Romans invaded the area and Belgium was controlled as a Roman province for nearly 300 years. Around 300 C.E., Romes power began to diminish when Germanic tribes were pushed into the area and eventually the Franks, a German group, took control of the country. After the arrival of the Germans, the northern part of Belgium became a German-speaking area, while the people in the south remained Roman and spoke Latin. Soon after, Belgium became controlled by the Dukes of Burgundy and was eventually taken over by the Hapsburgs. Belgium was then later occupied by Spain from 1519 to 1713 and Austria from 1713 to 1794. In 1795, however, Belgium was annexed by Napoleonic France after the French Revolution. Shortly thereafter, Napoleons army was beaten during the Battle of Waterloo near Brussels and Belgium became a part of the Netherlands in 1815. It was then not until 1830 that Belgium won its independence from the Dutch. In that year, there was an uprising by the Belgian people and in 1831, a constitutional monarchy was established and a monarch from the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in Germany was invited to run the country. Throughout the decades following its independence, Belgium was invaded several times by Germany. In 1944 though, British, Canadian and America armies formally liberated Belgium. Languages of Belgium Because Belgium was controlled by different foreign powers for centuries, the country is very diverse linguistically. Its official languages are French, Dutch and German but its population is divided into two distinct groups. The Flemings, the larger of the two, live in the north and speak Flemish- a language closely related to Dutch. The second group lives in the south and consists of the Walloons who speak French. In addition, there is a German community near the city of Lià ¨ge and Brussels is officially bilingual. These different languages are important to Belgium because concerns over losing linguistic power has caused the government to divide the country into different regions, each of which has control over its cultural, linguistic and educational matters. Belgiums Government Today, Belgiums government is run as a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch. It has two branches of government. The first is the executive branch which consists of the King, who serves as the head of state; the Prime Minister, who is the head of government; and the Council of Ministers which represents the decision-making cabinet. The second branch is the legislative branch which is a bicameral parliament made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The major political parties in Belgium are the Christian Democratic, the Liberal Party, the Socialist Party, the Green Party and Vlaams Belang. Voting age in the country is 18. Because of its focus on regions and local communities, Belgium has several political subdivisions, each of which have a varied amount of political power. These include ten different provinces, three regions, three communities and 589 municipalities. Industry and Land Use of Belgium Like many other European countries, Belgiums economy consists mainly of the service sector but industry and agriculture are also significant. The northern area is considered the most fertile and much of the land there is used for livestock, although some of the land is used for agriculture. The main crops in Belgium are sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and barley. In addition, Belgium is a heavily industrialized country and coal mining was once important in southern areas. Today, though, almost all of the industrial centers are in the north. Antwerp, one of the largest cities in the country, is the center of petroleum refining, plastics, petrochemicals and the manufacturing of heavy machinery. It is also famous for being one of the worlds largest diamond trading centers. Geography and Climate of Belgium The lowest point in Belgium is sea level at the North Sea and its highest point is Signal de Botrange at 2,277 feet (694 m). The rest of the country features a relatively flat topography consisting of coastal plains in the northwest and gently rolling hills throughout the countrys central portion. The southeast, however, does have a mountainous region in its Ardennes Forest area. The climate of Belgium is considered maritime temperate with mild winters and cool summers. Torsion bar: These are usually metal bars which act as a spring and can also be moved about its axis through twisting. The main job is to resist the torque placed on the vehicle by twist it along its axis. This provides the resistance level to the forces that are generated by the movement of the vehicle. Augusta and Ncwo Essay

This report analyses the case study about â€Å"Augusta National Golf Club and NCWO battle for admitting female membership†. Mainly, this report will examine and identify the communication traits and flaws that can be found in this case study and will provide solutions and what should be done rather than taking a stand on who is right and wrong. Therefore, all the communications between Augusta’s Chairman, Mr. Johnson, NCWO’s Chairwoman, Ms. Burk, the CEOs of Sponsor companies, the Augusta members and the media were researched and studied. Furthermore, this report mainly uses secondary data such as newspaper articles and journals to support the arguments and ideas. Moreover, the core purposes of this report is to evaluate the interactions and point out some communication management factors and flaws from this dispute, set it as an example and provide solutions to be improved in the future business communication. Main body Augusta, the private golf club Augusta is the private golf club which its culture and membership are mainly reflected on its prestige and exclusiveness. Moreover, members of Augusta join the club to satisfy mutual interests and to fulfil the social needs and the need for self-esteem such as being a part of the highly regarded golf club in the country. Because it is a private club, it holds its legal rights to choose its own members. (Peraino, 2002). Furthermore, the club clearly specified the club (team) norms (obligation, preference and prohibition) such as â€Å"members are required to sign an agreement not to speak about the club† and have to withhold the membership information to the outsiders. Saporito). Therefore, Augusta organizational control can be identified as a bureaucratic control system where the Chairman, Mr. Johnson has the ultimate power to dominate the club’s affairs. NCWO On the other hand, the NCWO’s sole purpose is to promote women rights and members join the committee to achieve security and satisfy their mutual interests. As you can see from the case, Ms. Burk, the chair of NCWO usually do the decision making for the committee. Although the decision making criteria are not formally discussed in the case or in the media (newspaper articles), we can assume that NCWO lacks the rational decision making process in groups such as orientation, discussion, decision making and implementation. Also, in his article Munching (2002) states that â€Å"she (Burk) forgot to ask herself one question: What women want to do? † which clarify the lack of communication between members of the group and its chair. The dispute The offensive approach and the vulgar feedback It can be seen in the case that without deeply analysing the situation, Ms. Burk took an offensive approach demanding and insisting on female membership, base mainly on the speech about â€Å"inclusion of women in Augusta† by Mr. Lloyd Ward. Moreover, Augusta’s Chair, Mr. Johnson also gave a vulgar feedback to this demand which sparks into a dispute of gender issue. Moreover, negative impressions between them were formed on limited information and stereotyping where Burk is seems as the trouble maker and Johnson as the rigid discriminator. Therefore, this miscommunication and poor transaction of messages led to unnecessary conflicts and egotism of the two corresponding Chairs. The Sponsors, members and Burk When the direct demand fails, Burk took the indirect persuasion and argumentation approach through the Augusta’s sponsors for its prime event, the Masters. She appealed to CEOs of sponsor companies like Citigroup, IBM, Coca-cola, Cadillac and CBS using generalisation and cause-effect relationship methods of arguments to boycott the Masters. For example, she praised their stance in gender discrimination within their firm and point out the possible public opinion in the involvement with the Masters. However, only Citigroup and Coca-cola agreed to help her and these decisions can be seen as corporate social responsibility to raise their public images. On the other hand, others remain neutral to avoid uncertainties involving in the dispute. Moreover, she turns to persuade the members of Augusta, who are highly regarded CEOs of the corporate world. However, with them she used the illegitimate methods of arguments such as appeal to the masses and â€Å"ad hominem† whereby she threatens them and their organization by claiming to reveal the membership list and the â€Å"daily anecdotes of gender discriminations in their (members’) companies†. (2005). For instance, it is noted in Peraino’s (2002) article that â€Å"she told Newsweek that â€Å"We’ve already done quite a bit on the public-embarrassment front†Ã¢â‚¬ . In addition, she even tried to convince Tiger Wood not to participate in the Masters but he too was â€Å"criticized for suggesting that Augusta has a right to its exclusionary policies† (Gutner, 2002). Therefore, one can clearly see from the case study that Burk used many deductive logics and generalisations in influencing and communicating with the sponsors, the members and the players. Burk and Johnson From the start, Mr. Johnson strongly showed his assertiveness as well as his aggressiveness for his club and its membership rules. However, one can recognize the cognitive dissonances from Mr. Johnson’s feedbacks and replies where he imposed denials and unwillingness to change the traditional rules and culture. Moreover, this effect can also be found in Saporito’s article, as â€Å"he booted the Masters’ sponsors–Citigroup, Coca-Cola and IBM–so the companies wouldn’t face criticism by association† and adopted the commercial free move. In addition, Johnson and Burk took hold of some perceptual biases against each other and some of these are selective perception where both of them ignored each other’s rational reasons. Furthermore, stereotyping can clearly be seen between them where they posed each other as threats and arch enemies. Conclusion and results In conclusion, one can identify more communication flaws than the benefits in his case. This is mainly because the poor usage of appropriate communication features and the channels used to communicate, for example, Burk main communication channel with her advocates and opponents is through letters. Moreover, narcissism and egotism also got involved later in the dispute where both of the Chairs started to address and confront each other comments and feedback harshly rather than solving the dispute. (Munching, 2002). As a result, Johnson acquired victory by reasoning through generalization and analogy among private clubs and sororities claiming its legal rights to choose its own members. The dispute between Mr. Johnson (Augusta Golf Club) and Ms. Burk (NCWO) is very phenomenal in indicating miscommunications between two unfriendly organizations. As for the recommendations for this case, since the start, both parties should use more subtle and civil approaches to address the problem to each other and discuss in person how to compromise the situation. For example, Shiflett (2003) implies in his article that Augusta never meant to discriminate and it is only following its highly constructed social role as an all male-club. Moreover, they should utilize more â€Å"lateral thinking†, avoid what is right and wrong and conclude to the best possible solution. In addition, Burk should change her persuasion techniques towards more â€Å"features-benefits mix† and should drop her deductive logic on women rights and organizations. Furthermore, both of them should leave out their egotisms and stereotypical perceptions when dealing with the gender issue. On the other hand, while confronting with the members she should shows cause-effect relationships of their inaction and argues upon their specific reasoning. Munching, 2002). As for Mr. Johnson reactions, he should be more aware on the public images of the club and its members. Moreover, Augusta’s individual orientation of culture should swap with a more collective one where all stakeholders can give out their opinions. Last but not least, the channels used for communication in this case should be changed into more personal and face to face l ike personal meetings or through telephone. This was even suggested by Tiger Wood that â€Å"they’d sit down together and all would be resolved†. (Munching, 2002).

Vaccinations Should Be Mandatory Out Of Vaccinating Children

When it comes to certain topics there is always going to be controversy surrounding them; this is the case with the topic of whether or not children should be vaccinated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) they recommend that children get vaccinated against up to 14 diseases within their first two years of life, and receiving booster shots as they get older. This idea leads to numerous debates on why children should be vaccinated or why parents should be able to opt out of vaccinating their children due to developmental concerns or religious beliefs. In my opinion, however, regardless of religious beliefs, vaccinations should be mandatory—unless there is a medical reason not to—because not only do vaccinations protect children from various diseases and can save their lives, but they also protect others around them and future generations. In April, California’s State Legislature moved forward a bill that would make it mandatory for children enrolled in public schools to be vaccinated, regardless of religious or personal beliefs.
